New Jersey Transit is on track, with a commuter nightmare.
Major fare increases are planned.
The agency will also freeze spending, cut 2 percent of its workforce and reduce executive salaries.
Getting on a NJ Transit train or bus is going to cost you more. Officials told CBS 2 HD fares will go up — and they could go up as much as 30 percent.
For a commuter who spends $5.50 on a train ride from Hackensack to New York now, a 30 percent hike could mean an extra $1.50.
NJ Transit told CBS 2 HD there will also be service cuts on every train line.
The fare increases, which could be implemented as early as May, come after Gov. Chris Christie’s decision to withhold a $32 million subsidy to NJ Transit in order to close a huge budget deficit.
While the governor’s nominee to head the Transportation Department has said he wouldn’t rule out new tolls on Route 80, Christie said he’s dead against that and it would never happen under his watch.
NJ Transit is set to make the official announcement about fare hike and service cuts Friday.
The agency plans on holding public hearings on the fare hike proposal throughout the state, starting this month. NJ Transit hasn’t raised fares since 2007.
