New App Allows NYC Drivers To Pay For parking Via Cellphone

muniThe following is via WABC:

One of the biggest headaches in New York City, parking, is about to get easier.

Drivers will soon be able to pay for street parking via their cell phones.

The city has partnered with ‘Park-Mobile’ and created an app for payments at all of the city’s street meters.

You won’t have to buy a ticket at the meter anymore, just use the app to pay.

Drivers will be alerted if the time is expiring and can simply add more time remotely.

They will also receive a credit if they leave the spot with time left on the clock.

Parkmobile already operates a similar app in other cities, like Hoboken, and developed this one for New York City at no cost.

It makes good a promise Mayor de Blasio made during his State of the City address in February to have parking by cell technology by the end of the year.

The NYPD will also benefit from the mobile technology as police officers will be able to issue parking tickets electronically.

The citywide app is an expansion of a pilot program that began in 2013 in the Belmont area of the Bronx at 264 public spaces and a 54-space DOT parking lot.

  1. If your ticket won’t be on the dashboard, or even if it is and you’ve bought more time remotely and your ticket on your dashboard is not updated, then how will the ticket agent know if you’ve paid or not and to not ticket your car?

  2. What protection is there for the driver in the event that the meter person gets to expired meter just as more time is added or some other snafu occurs in the system?
