A major fire that broke out at NYU Langone Medical Center has been extinguished.

New York University Hospital Center is located at 560 1st Avenue near East 34th Street.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen wafting up from the hospital and could be seen as far away as Fifth Avenue.

The Fire Department of New York says the fire at NYU was placed under control Wednesday afternoon, less than an hour after it began.

It says one civilian suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.

The fire started on the 5th floor of the new building. The building is next to the main hospital building and is under construction.

Hospital spokesman Jim Mandler says the fire was at a building that’s scheduled to open in 2018.

Sources told YWN that it appears roofing materials appear to have caught fire.

An investigation is underway.
