David D., 53, the Jerusalem man accused in vandalism attacks against judges insists he is innocent and the court proceedings will attest to his innocence. Police on the other hand report a different version of events, citing video evidence of the suspect’s guilt.
Police told the remand hearing that ‘D’ slashed tires on vehicles belonging to judges in six different attacks, adding that since last September, the tires were slashed on vehicles of court registrar Judge Uri Phoni (three times), and Justice Anna Schneider (twice), culminating with the most recent attack against Schneider’s vehicle this shabbos, in which he also wrote “You, Beinish = murder” on the vehicle.
Police official Eli Cohen was assigned to head the investigation, and his cross checks in the cases against both justices revealed that the suspect is indeed a viable culprit for the attacks. Police report that while the suspect has a police record, they lack conclusive proof, but add a search of his vehicle revealed three knives, which police report were used in the attacks.
During interrogation he denied the allegations, insisting he is innocent, and provided an alibi for the most recent attack which is still being verified. The court on Monday extended his remand for five additional days.
Defense attorney Michael Ironi told the media his client does not understand why he was arrested. Speaking to reporters from the courthouse ‘D’ stated “I am not connected to the attacks. I was home. I have total belief in the court system and I am confident the truth will come out”.
