Shoe Bomber Says He Can’t Pay $250,000 Fine

REIDThe British man sentenced to life in prison for trying to detonate explosives in his shoe on a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 says he can’t afford the $250,000 fine that was part of his sentence.

Richard Reid has asked a federal judge in Boston to declare him bankrupt.

The Boston Herald reports that the 43-year-old Reid writes: “I am not now, nor will I — I believe — ever be, able to pay this fine.”

Reid contacted Judge William Young after receiving notice last month reminding him the payment is past due.

Young on Thursday told prosecutors they have until Dec. 16 to respond to Reid’s request to have the fine forgiven.

Reid tried to set off the bomb on a Paris-to-Miami American Airlines flight. The plane was diverted to Boston.

  1. Maybe we should take up a collection for him and while we r at it get him plastic surgery on his ugly face and a haircut to boot

  2. Might want to get him some deoderant, too. I was told by the Israeli security guy who interviewed him when he was staking out El Al (that’s another long story, not for here) that “he smelled like a goat.”

  3. Never mind the fact that he tried brutaly murdering hundreds of innocent people in middle of the atlantic ocean. He is the reason that hundreds of millions of people have had to remove their shoes before getting on a plane!!!!!
Special kisei hakavod for him in gehinom!

  4. If he could not pay the fine when he started his life sentence, how does anyone expect to earn $250,000 while serving his life term?

And, yes, commenter no. 1, the problem with this guy is that he is ugly and unshaven. Actually, in the 15 years since this photo was taken, he has probably gotten the haircut and shave you think he needs. Do you really think that will make him a better person? As for ugly, how does he compare to you? And why does it matter?
