A new law that raises the number of required driver’s education hours for teen drivers will go into effect Monday.
Residents who apply for a New York State driver’s license must now complete 50 hours of driver’s ed, instead of 20 hours. The new law also allows only one passenger outside of a teen driver’s family to ride in a car, instead of two.
Lawmakers hope the new requirement and restriction will keep teens safer. Last year, more than 200 teenagers died in car accidents in New York State.

this is a great idea . this will cut down on a cars with young drivers who get distracted very easy.
For those enrolled in a DRIVER EDUCATION certified program, the supervised amount of hours is still 20 while those NOT in a driver ed program the hours have now risen to 50 hours.
Lets see them enforce this one passenger rule against the street gangs that go cruising to sell drugs or look for rival gang members to shoot.
If they do it, it would help cut down on street violence, but I have my doubts they will actually enforce it in those cases.
