NY Post: MTA Runs First Subway Car Fitted With Cameras

Four cars of an E train equipped with state-of-the-art security cameras made their first run this morning as part of an anti-terror, anti-crime initiative that the MTA could expand to every subway line.

The cars — each with four cameras — bear stickers that read, “Notice: This train may be equipped with a video recording device.”

The train will make four runs — two in the morning and two in the afternoon — today from Jamaica Center in Queens to the World Trade Center.

The cameras won’t be monitored live but will make digital recordings that could be used in police investigations and criminal prosecutions.

“Video camera systems have clearly been shown to help deter criminal activity on transit vehicles,” said NYC Transit chief Thomas Prendergast.

Also installed in the cars are fold-up seats along each wall, which transit officials may eventually use to squeeze in about 40 more people during rush hours. The camera system was manufactured and installed by California-based TOA Corp. at little cost to the MTA.

There will be a 12-month evaluation process, and a final decision on their use will be made next year.
