YWN-ISRAEL reported a talmid Yeshivas Kaminetz was arrested for failing to report to the draft when he entered a police station to file a complaint. When police entered his ID number into the computer, they realized he is wanted by the military police. He was promptly placed under arrest and arraigned by a military judge.

His arrest and imprisonment before Shabbos led to HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita calling for nationwide protests on his behalf.

The protests began late Sunday afternoon 5 Cheshvan and continued into the evening. Protests were seen in many areas including Jerusalem’s Kikar Shabbos and Bar Ilan Junction as well as Shilat Junction, Hashmonaim Junction, Elad Junction, and Yavne Interchange.

At Shilat Junction angry motorists attacked chareidim. They report police did not intervene to protest them. At Bar Ilan Junction in Jerusalem, an 18-year-old female sustained moderate head and upper extremities injuries and was transported to Shaare Zedek hospital. Numerous arrests were made.

  1. Refusing to register for conscription is conscientious objection, and it would be intelligent for the zionists to ignore it. This is hardly someone they would want in the army. Most countries in fact do not allow persons who opposed the government to serve in the military. By arresting someone for not recognizing the medinah’s authority, the Israelis call attention to the fact that many Jews do not accept the zionist narrative, which undermines Israel’s international support which is largely based on people see the zionist state in religious terms (based on “real politics” the west would have tossed Israel under the bus generations ago).

  2. #1 These kind of protests are part of learning. Piku’ach nefesh is docheh everything. What’s more piku’ach nefesh than stopping a government from shmading Jewish souls?

  3. What’s with the burning garbage and calling police Nazis (clearly audible in the fourth video)? The standard Chareidi line on this is that the protestors who do this are individuals not backed by the Gedolim – but here, the protest was specifically called for by one of those very same “Gedolim”. And don’t give the excuse that this behavior was not foreseen by the one who called for the protest, as this was eminently foreseeable – “Eizehu Chacham – Haroeh es Hanolad”.

It reminds me of what one of my Rabe’im said many years ago – the worst kind of Chilul Hashem is the one that’s done “Leshem Shamayim”.

  4. A chareidi brigade? Like nachal chareidi? I know quite a few who went through that brigade and the majority are now less frum (if they are at all observant ) than when they went in. Can’t see it ever working unfortunately.

  5. I think some of the main questions to ask are

    1) What do these protests accomplish other than increase the divide between chareidim and chilonim? Do they make the chiloinim say “hey maybe they are right, we should have respect for Torah and those who learn and let them be”? I think not. All it does is fuel hatred for chareidim and lessen the chance of being mekareiv our brethren.

    2) How can you protest someone who is arrested for breaking the law? I believe it is analogous to someone who gets caught speeding and then argues with the judge that the speeding limit should really have been higher in his opinion. That is not the time to argue that point. Every country has rules and if you decide to break them that is your choice but don’t be surprised if you get caught.

the question of “is the army good for the Jews or bad for the Jews?” is irrelevant at this point (however fun it may be to discuss)

  6. #7 re: #5
Talking about provocation. A policewoman was seen by several witnesses stuffing a stone into a pocket of a handcuffed person… Don’t believe everything you hear from bogus media.

    #8 correct

    1) Thanks to the protest, the bochur is out of jail. The only way chareidim have a say is by protesting. And it b”H works.

    2) You’re getting it wrong. It’s the government that broke the law. According to the government, Israel is a Jewish state, which means laws according to Torah. Forcing Yeshiva boys to the Shmad organization is breaking the law.

  7. #7 Aryeh – I live in Israel and am very aware of the situation there. The issues you raise are totally irrelevant to the point I made. Two (or three) wrongs – don’t make a right.

  8. #11 I didn’t raise any issues. I stated FACTS! You might not like it, but everything is 100% true and being that Gedolei Yisroel are behind it was a huge Kiddush Hashem.

If you live in Israel doesn’t automatically mean you know everything. Obviously, you don’t.

  9. @12

Are Gedolei Yisroel behind destruction of property? Violence? Preventing freedom of movement?

Tonight in Beit Shemesh, right on my street, these thugs were supposed to protest outside a Chareidi man’s home because he has a job, something to do with the IDF (conflicting stories on what he does.) Thanks to the plans that were in formation, all of a sudden it was called off by the organizers.

Tell me: do you honestly believe Gedolei Yisrael endorsed harassing a man for the job he does, and frightening his children? If the answer is YES, then there is a really terrible problem in the frum veldt. If no, then these animals are acting WITHOUT permission/support/encouragement from their Rabbonim, and should be doing what they are screaming about: learning.

Either way, no good can or will come of these actions.

  10. #10-

    1) Believe it or not, some people are able to be released from prison by legal means. Burning garbage and inconveniencing people does not work. Acc. to your logic maybe in order to get Rubashkin out of jail we burn garbage on the white house lawn and then call the police nazis.

    2) I don’t know where you got that idea from-the government has to follow the laws of the Torah? It might be a nice idea for when moshiach comes but that is just not the reality. Laws are not based on what you want them to be- they are what they are.

  11. #12 Aryeh – You raise two issues – the way that certain Chilonim incite against Chareidim, and the way the Peleg Yerushalmi is treated by other Litvish Chareidim. You can call them facts, perceptions, etc. – it makese no difference. Those two matters, even if you are completely correct with respect to them, in no way excuse the Chilul Hashem of Chareidim violently protesting and calling Israeli police, who put their lives on the line to defend the Am Hashem Hayoshev b’Tziyon, “Nazis”.

As to the protests being a Chilul Hashem – “Bemakom sheyesh chilul haShem ein cholkin kavod larav”. The Ma’amar calls the one to whom it refers a “Rav” – but still says we are not to stand by and not protest. “Asher Nasi Yechta” – even a Nasi makes mistakes – so don’t assume that anyone is beyond (respectful) critique.

Note that out of Kavod for the one who called for the protest, I deliberately did not use his name in my comment.

  12. #13 First of all, read posts #7 & 10 before accusing and maligning Gedolei Yisroel shlit”a and Chareidim.

Second, how can you call Holy Yeshiva boys “thugs”? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Third, it was called off because the protest last night was baruch Hashem very successful and the bachur is out.

#14 First of all, read posts #7 & 10 before accusing and maligning Chareidim.

Second, the government “officially” declared it’s a Jewish State. How else could they claim the land of Israel? Only through the Torah. If they don’t follow the laws of the Torah, that’s not the yeshivos’ problem.

#15 If you’d read posts #7 & 10 before accusing and maligning Chareidim you’d note there was absolutely no Chillul Hashem by the Chareidim.

The one who called for the protest is one of the GEDOLEI HADOR, Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach shlit”a. There was not 1 one of his students who protested violently. Next time investigate the matter properly before maligning and being motzi shem ra on a group of Holy Chareidim.

The way you judge others, that’s how Hashem judges you.

  13. Sorry to break it to you (and I know reality hurts) but not all yeshiva boys are holy. The ones that are learning and growing in yiras shomayim, yes are very holy. Boys not in the Beis hamidrash who burn garbage have no regards for mitzvos bein adam lechaveiro, no hakoras hatov for the police and IDF who protect them are thugs. If they have zitsfleish to learn and instead spend their time creating chilul Hashem can not be called “holy”

  14. #16 Aryeh – repeating the same arguments, or referring back to the posts in which you initially made them, does not make them any stronger or more correct. I stand by my points as made.

As to whether the rioters were followers of the one who called the protests, or were mere hangers-on – “Eizehu Chacham? Haro’eh es Hanolad”. It was blatantly obvious to anyone with a modicum of foresight that these protests would descend to the violence that they did; therefore, there is responsibility on the individual in question for the results. As I stated earlier, “Bemakom sheyesh chilul haShem, ein cholkin kavod larav” – so I will, with trepidation, protest.

  15. Rav Chaim Shmulevitz zatzal was asked as to why why he didn’t allow Mirer bachurim to participate in hafganot.
He replied with a question on a pasuk. Why did Rivka think that she may be carrying a chameleon who would run to both a beis hamidrash and a bais avoda zara? Perhaps she was pregnant with a kanai who would run towards the avoda zara to protest it!?!
Rav Chaim answered that it was absolutely obvious to Rivka that one who is a true learner doesn’t run to protests but sits and learns all day long.

The question itself was in regard to peaceful hafganot, without name calling, rock throwing, burning garbage, or destroying property. Even a hava amina of such vile behavior didn’t exist in the original question.

  16. The point needs to be taken that by arresting a yeshiva student someone for draft resistance, and note that in much of the world refusal to serve in the military is considered honorable and perhaps noble, the Israeli are calling attention to the fact that there are Jews who refuse to support their war effort against the Muslims. It is not in the self-interest of the zionists to do this. Much of the support Israel gets from non-Jews are from those who see zionist as the fulfillment of a religious prophesy, and calling attention to hareidim screaming “it isn’t so” undermines this. Given that the zionists have no shortage of “jobniks”, they should ignore yeshiva students who oppose the medinah (and rely on economic incentives if they want to get hareidim to enlist).

  17. Let’s call a spade, a spade.
Anybody who riots, destroys property, inconveniences innocent pedestrians should be arrested. Any rabbi who urges his followers to wreak havoc should likewise be arrested and prosecuted.
Conscientious objectors should be at least gainfully employed. For example, the Amish in USA are one of the hardest working people in America, moral and decent , don’t bother anybody and contribute to the economy.

#20 wrote,– “there are Jews who refuse to support their war effort against the Muslims” LOL. Forever LOL. So, help your brethren move to Quatar, Arabia or Iran.
Defenders of riots: Don’t use our Torah to excuse hooliganism.

  18. Btw a person is not allowed to learn when there is a mitzvah that can’t be done by other now the mitzva is pidyon shvoyon and the more people we have protesting the more of a chance we have for the bocher to be let free (wich you see it worked) so any one that said we should be lerning got every thing wrong and any one that said it’s a chilool Hashem should be ashamed at him self for saying that doing a mitvah listening to Hashem could be a chilul Hashem should just know your making the chiul Hashem.

  19. #22-
I’ll cut you some slack. You sound like a temimisgiger fellow ,but naïve and brainwashed nevertheless.
There is no excuse for riots, destruction of property, shaming and throwing IDF soldiers out of shuls. NONE.
The control freaks who are worried that some will leave their yeshiva businesses are foaming at the mouth and thousands of robots can longer think for themselves.
You’re bringing shame on the frum.
Your pshetlach are less than worthless.
The leaders of the riots are bums and the rest are shleppers and ditzes. End of story.

  20. #21ithink it was the chazonish that paskind you are allowed to steal from the tzionim. #23 I know the people that start these machos there very chashuv people. And there doing it out of there Hart . like the chafatz chaim said at the end of his days that he should of fault wen the maskilim movement (the people that tried smading us up) started even though it was not posibal to win in his own . because the sari tuva says you just have to start and Hashem will do the rest.
