NYC Officials Try To Contain Mumps Outbreak

New York City health officials are planning a vaccination campaign in a bid to contain a persistent mumps outbreak.

The city’s health department hopes to vaccinate 3,000 people or more in two Brooklyn neighborhoods hit hard by the illness.

The campaign is targeting enclaves of Orthodox Jews in Williamsburg and Borough Park, where the disease has afflicted hundreds of men and boys.

State health officials are also stepping up vaccination efforts in Orange County, which has also seen a large number of cases.

The mumps outbreak is the largest in the U.S. in years.

Many of the people falling ill with the disease have already had a vaccination, but the shots aren’t 100 percent effective.

  1. 62% of these boys will develop orchitis (testicular inflammation) and 10% will become sterile. How will they ever find a shidduch? You can thank their parents for not getting them vaccinated.

  2. RavBaruch,

You may be a “rav” but when it comes to medicine, you are no better than an Am HaOretz.

The stats show that these people HAD the vaccine!!! This has been pointed on on YWN over and over!! My nephews, niece, brother in law (TWICE!), friends, etc., who had the mumps ALL HAD THE VACCINE!!!

So before you run your fingers off on your keyboard, keep in mind that people DID have the vaccine and you don’t know what you are talking about!

One more thing, thank you for your brocha (b’loshon noki) about what will happen with 10% of the boys and for the brocha about them not getting a shiduch.
