Rabbi David Niederman, the President of the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn gave the following statement to YWN following the article regarding the Shabbos siren in Williamsburg:
“The sounds of houses of worship, whether it be a church bell, Islamic call to prayer or shabbos bell make up the tones that are the anthem of the City of New York,” he said, adding that the city’s noise code gives religious organizations an exemption.
“The congregation offered the city – and still look forward – to sit down with the city and the neighbors to deal with this issue, and I hope that this will be resolved amicably.”

Sirens are not necessary, for years we have all started shabbos on time by checking our weekly Jewish calendars. There are much more impt battles to wage for religious freedoms.
Zion though I agree with you. It is a new phemoium but as long as Moslem use loud speaker to call for prayer and church’s use recorded bells played yet again over loud speakers. Guess we can too
