PM Netanyahu Seeking to Persuade Russia to Support Sanctions

Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office report that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will be leaving for Russia on Sunday to meet with state leaders, hoping to persuade Russia to support major sanctions against Iran.

At present, the USA, Italy, France, Germany and the UK favor imposing crippling economic sanctions against Iran, while China and Russia remain opposed, tying the hands of the permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Speaking to party officials on Sunday, the prime minister stressed the importance of the state visit, explaining it is essential that he succeed in persuading Russia to support sanctions if diplomatic efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear program are to be successful.

  1. Moshiach,
Where do you get your info. Russians are very anti semitic. Look at what just happened in Ukraine with the elections. Russia is the same way. They hate Jews.

  2. WellInformedYid,

While Russia itself does have a horrible history of anti-Semitism, I see no evidence that Medvedev or Putin are anti-Semites. They are just power-hungry despots. But they don’t want a nuclear armed Iran just a missile’s fire away; they will just play the West for concessions and will fall in line. China is a bigger problem; we really have no leverage with it.

  3. #2, I cannot possibly compile a list of where I get all my information from, but I appreciate you would like to know because I am very selective. Nonetheless, my posts stands: Russia is not overly happy with Iran. Hopefully they will see the forest for their trees. I am not sure why you read into my post that they were favorable to Israel for the sake of Israel. That was not stated.
