A large banner featuring the likeness of Russian President Vladimir Putin was unfurled on the Brooklyn side of the Manhattan Bridge on Thursday afternoon at about 2 p.m. The banner, with the word “Peacemaker” on it, was not immediately claimed by anyone.

An NYPD spokesman said he was unaware of the banner as of 2:30 p.m., and that police have taken nobody into custody. An FDNY spokesman said he was unaware of the banner as well. A spokesman for the NYC Department of Transportation, which operates the bridge, said he was aware of the banner but needed to get more information before commenting.

As is usual in news events such as these, social media lit up with witness footage.
