Legendary Mayor Ed Koch Endorses David Greenfield for City Council

New York City Council candidate David G. Greenfield has been endorsed by former New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch. Greenfield, an experienced attorney and acclaimed community advocate, is running in the 44th Council District to replace Councilman Simcha Felder, who vacated his seat to become a Deputy Comptroller in the New York City Comptroller’s office. The 44th Council District includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Boro Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst.

Koch, a prolific author, renowned lecturer and political commentator, and experienced attorney, served as the Mayor of the City of New York for three terms, from 1978-1989. Koch’s career in public service began when he was elected to the City Council. He was subsequently elected to the United States Congress.

“I began my career in the City Council, and I know the kind of person it takes to do the job right,” said Mayor Koch. “David is a warm, caring person who understands what it takes to organize our communities and make a forceful case for our shared priorities. I know he will put his heart and soul into serving his community.”

“I am humbled and proud to have the support of Mayor Koch,” said Greenfield. “Mayor Koch’s exemplary record of public service and his long and distinguished history of serving the New York community is something that I will strive to emulate as a City Councilman.”

In addition to the support of Mayor Koch, Greenfield has also received the endorsements of a number of other prominent elected officials, including Senators Carl Kruger and Martin J. Golden, and Councilmen Vincent J. Gentile, Michael C. Nelson, Domenic M. Recchia, Jr., and Lewis A. Fidler. Greenfield has also received widespread support from prominent members of every ethnic community in the diverse 44th Council District, including the Ashkenaz, Sephardic, & Chasidic communities.

Greenfield has committed to continue working towards relief for tuition-paying parents and securing additional funding for private and public schools. In addition, Greenfield’s top priorities include creating jobs, enhancing services for seniors, improving transportation, and lowering taxes and fines.

  1. Get “Brocha” from Ed Koch, it’s like get curse. It least for electoral from Boro Park.I don’t think this a good move for Greenfield.

  2. #2 – Ditto! Koch is very anti-frum. I remember several years ago he was filled with irrepressible glee because he heard Israel might be stopping army exemptions for yeshiva boys.
(Not to mention his recently announced plans to be buried in a goyish cemetery when his time comes.)

  3. #4, what did he do or say that was anti-frum? I saw public television program with him speaking beautifully about prayers, the Hebrew language, and about Pesach.

  4. David should be very proud to get the endorsement of Ed Koch. Let’s not forget it was Ed Koch who signed Executive Order 50 banning anti-homosexual discrimination by city contractors, including the Archdiocese of New York, and Agudath Israel.

This is also the wonderful friend of our community who was ready to put an incinerator in Williamsburg against the will of the community.

Greenfield may have Koch, but Lazar has the support of virtually all the mosdos in Boro park and Flatbush.

  5. My humble advice to David is: Get in touch with the people, the ordinary simple working man. Reach out to the voters and try to get the community Askanim’s endorsements (of course not the ones that recieve grants from the Hikind machine). While these political endorsements show the strength and connections you have when it comes to being effective in the council, the voters are the ones that actually come out to vote and they only look at the one that reached out to them. I’d suggest you to request your opponents to join you for a public live debate or debates (with a live feed here on YWN of course) so that people can actually hear and see where you stand on issues and your solution to people’s needs.

  6. Koch is irrelevant in 2010. A Manhattan oriented 85+ year old who’s chosen his burial place and matzavah doesn’t carry much weight among voters to young to remember him.

  7. Ha! #6 is living in fantasy land!

“Greenfield may have Koch, but Lazar has the support of virtually all the mosdos in Boro park and Flatbush.”

    WHICH mosdos have endorsed him?

    Tell us please.

Oh, and FYI, last night we found out that the Lazar/Hikind PR machine are nothing short of lying weasels. Senator Parker never endorsed Lazar as his campaign claimed. This leaves me with anything that lazar says to be one big lie.

  8. David Greenfield will be winning this race hands down.

The best thing was a 3rd frum candidiate. This will split Boro park in half, and David will get all Flatbush and Bensonhurst.

Ask anyone who has a half a clue as to how the elections work in the neighborhood.

  9. Anyone notice how the Hikind camp scurried off into the night after YWN exposed them last night?

Actually, they exposed themselvs, and amazingly with the help of Senator Park, who is only in office after Hikind “put him there” (instead of Simcha Felder). It’s always great to endorse a violent Senator who has been arrested for assault over an upstanding member of the frum community, who gave himself blev vnefesh to the community for years.

  10. The Koch endorsement does not surpise me. I’m sure he was very happy upon hearing that Greenfield announced his run for office. On his Radio Show he made mention of Dov’s shenanigan’s many times.

Finally someone to take on the Hikind machine. A politician has to be someone who is here to serve us people not his own interests or the machine’s, or Dov Hikind’s.

How come Lazar refuses to debate Greenfield. Let Lazar take the challenge and partake in a live debate on the issues in a assembly hall in Boro Park or Flatbush and let the people decide for themselves.

But the person whos is behind this is Hikind.

HIKIND HAS PRESSURED THE AGUDA THAT UNLESS THEY GET THE YESHIVOS TO BACK HIS CANDIDATE, HE WILL NOT DELIVER ONE MORE PENNY TO THEM. THIS AFTER HIM BEING MEVAZE THE GEDOLIM AND THE AGUDA ONHIS RADIO SHOW WITH RESPECT TO THE MARKEY BILL AND HIS INFLATED CLAIMS OF MOLESTATION.

Hikind claims that Joe Lazar has brought MILLIONS into the community “mosdos” over the past years. Why can’t the yeshivos make payroll?

SHOW US THE MONEY, in whose pocket did it go?

Does Hikind mean Ohel? Speak to Asher Lipner about Ohel. He used to work at Ohel.

Read Hamodia Magazine regarding record Poverty in Boro Park!

Ask Tomchei Shabas regarding record Poverty in Boro Park.

Ask Masbia regarding record Poverty in Boro Park!

We still have the KIDs @ Risk despite the millions that Dov claims to have received from Albany. In whose pocket did the money go?

Ask Asher Lipner, why he no longer appears on the Dov Hikind Show and no longer works for OHEL.

Dov, your gig is up. Time for change with proven results. DAVID CAN SHOW US THE MONEY, DOV CAN YOU?

By the way, Dov who pays for all those trips to Israel??

AND WHY DO YOU HAVE MILLIONS IN YOUR CAMPAIGN WAR CHEST THAT YOU TAKE WITH YOU WHEN YOU LEAVB OFFICE. YOU HAVEN’T HAD AN OPPONENT IN YEARS. WHY DO YOU HAVE FUNDRAISERS FOR “CAMPAIGNS”???

  11. #5 MoshiachNow – I have heard him make many anti-frum remarks, but the one that stands out so clearly in my mind was from when he used to have a radio talk show many years ago. He could not stop going on and on and on (about a subject I would think most New Yorkers would have no interest in) about how ecstatically happy he was that (it looked like at the time) that Israeli yeshiva bochrim would no longer be able to get an army deferment to continue their learning.
I was so angry about it at the time that (I was driving and it was before I had a cell phone) that I pulled over, found a public phone and called his show. I told him that EVEN the United States (during the Vietnam war era draft) had an army deferment for what were called “divinity” students (i.e. people studying to be rabbis or l’havdil, priests or ministers). He denied this and said he never heard of such a thing.
The point is though, you would not believe the joy, the happiness in his voice from the thought that these boys would be forced out of yeshiva.

  12. HeimishinBP, Good to hear the point of why Koch is supporting Greenfield. According to that Greenfield can expect to recieve the backing of mayor Giuliani (an old Hikind foe) and Bloomberg (Holocaust memorial?! BPJCC Event?!) while Lazar will be picking up the endorsements of Hikind’s friends; David Dinkins and Governor Paterson, and Thompson (now let’s hear Dov play the race card). Ha… Ha… Ha… Go HIKIND Go [away]!!!

  13. Hey Mr. Maya, how am I doin’? How am I doin’? Still proud of ending 24/7 police protection in front of 770? They sure could use it now!

  14. A question that I posted last week in another
    Greenfield related article:

Why does Yeshiva World push Greenfield so much?
Does he own stock in YW?

  15. Note PS:

Is Greenfield also humbled by Koch’s support of
    the mishkav zochornicks (and other types of nevailah, such as the desire to be buried in a goyishe cemetary when he dies;

I guess for the propects of getting elected its worth it.

a little bit of chanifah goes a long way!

  16. I have also called radio talk shows on WABC radio (and have been
told more then once I’d be a good talk host myself, if I could find a staton to hire me and try me out) including Ed Koch’s show.

He was supporting the Arab terrorists and making all kinds of excuses for them and anyone who said that Israel had the right to defend themselves
    was a ‘fanatic’.

Both him and Bob Grant who came on later (and now Bob is on, on Sunday afternoons, WABC where I do not hear the old antisemitism he used to have, at least I have not heard him let listeners hear it, like he used to do) had the same antisemitic attitude.

  17. Hey Chevra,
Did everyone fall asleep at the wheel? Don’t you know that Reb Nachman Caller anounced his candidacy for city council? He’s the man we want. He’s a very sharp successful attorney. He’s a big talmid chochom, a true ben Tora. His goal is purely for the tzibbur. So what’s the hock with greenfeld or lazar it’s Nachman Caller all the way. Check him out.
