Truck Driver Shot at Kalandia Checkpoint in Serious Condition

Ofir Regev, 35, the Israeli gasoline tanker driver shot and wounded when he failed to stop at the northern Jerusalem Kalandia Checkpoint is in an intensive care unit in Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, in serious condition, on a respirator. It was first thought that his condition was less serious.

On Sunday, YWN-Israel reported the truck driver was shot. He was driving away from Arabs who were attacking his vehicle with rocks, apparently distracting him enough that he did not realize he had approached the inspection point.

The soldiers manning the checkpoint saw a tanker heading directly at them, not slowing down, assuming this was another vehicular terror attack and the driver intended to run them down. The soldiers saw the vehicle coming from a PA (Palestinian Authority) autonomous area, driving somewhat irregular, even striking a number of parked vehicles. They were certain this was an attack involving a gasoline tanker.

All efforts to signal the driver to halt were in vain, compelling security personnel to open fire in accordance to protocol. It appears that he was hit in a number of places, not just his shoulder as was first reported.
