NYPD Shoot Armed Man Armed With Knife In Bronx

knPolice shot and wounded a man with a knife in the Bronx early Wednesday morning.

Officers said around 1 a.m., police observed a man running and holding his side. They thought he might have a weapon, said NYPD Bronx Patrol Borough Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen.

The officers told him to stop, but the suspect fled into 2755 Dewey Ave. The officers chased him into the building, and when they caught up with him on the seventh floor, he had a knife and was cutting himself, police said. The man also threatened to kill himself.

Nikunen said a sergeant deployed a taser, but the suspect continued to advance toward the officers with a knife.

One of the uniformed housing officers then fired, hitting the suspect in the upper right thigh. The suspect still refused to drop the knife, Nikunen said, and the sergeant deployed the taser again, allowing the officers to place the suspect into custody.

The suspect, Carlos Colon, 25, was taken Jacobi Medical Center and is stable condition.

Police said he might be under the influence of drugs, maybe heroin.

Two housing officers were uninjured but taken to Einstein Hospital for observation.

Nikunen said police actually were responding to reports of crew-related violence at the housing complex. One of the officers involved had made an arrest before the incident.

It is unclear if Colon was involved in gang activity.
