Hundreds of new words have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
Some of our favorites include “YOLO” which stands for “you only live once.”
‘Merica, which has become an ironic abbreviation for America.
And, one that we’re all familiar with in New York and New Jersey, “fuhgeddaboudit.”
“In representations of regional speech (associated especially with New York and New Jersey): ‘forget about it’, used to indicate that a suggested scenario is unlikely or undesirable.”
Bay Ridge needed no help defining “fuhgeddaboudit” on the day that blend of 14 letters entered a 132-year-old dictionary assembled 3,500 miles and an ocean away.
