As the Ministerial Legislative Committee works to drum up support for the Shas/ Kadima-supported Chametz Bill, which was supposed to have been approved by the committee on Sunday, some remain opposed, preventing the bill from advancing on Sunday as expected. The delay was the second in as many weeks.
Time is of the essence as the growing number of supporters is determined to push the bill through in time for this Pessach, seeking to outlaw the sale of chametz in Yerushalayim during yomtov.
Addressing the bill in the subcommittee, Minister of Public Security (Yisrael Beitenu) Yitzchak Aharonovitch expressed his opinion, his inability to support such a bill. He stated this is “Biyur of the coalition, not biyur chametz”.
Adding to the frustration is the reality that the objections are to the bill presented by Kadima MK Otniel Schneller, a more palatable bill than Shas’ draft, which has been removed from the agenda by Shas, with the party agreeing to move ahead with the Schneller bill.
Shas responded firmly, explaining there is no room to amend the current bill and anyone dissatisfied with it can present an alternative version but the current bill remains as is.

Yisroel Betainu is a Chiloni party just one step removed from the late, unlamented Shinui. These are the same people who are fighting to open pork stores in Beit Shemesh.
