Rav Sorotzkin: Education Ministry Is Not Interfering In Chareidi Education

1Amid allegations of discrimination from the Union of Seminars (frum girl’s high schools), the CEO of Chinuch Atzmai Rabbi Eliezer Sorotzkin on Wednesday night announced he does not see any effort by the Chareidi Unit of the Education Ministry to interfere in chareidi education. Rabbi Sorotzkin made his remarks to Avi Mimron of Kol Chai Radio.

“No teacher can claim the Education Ministry is interfering” Rabbi Sorotzkin began, adding “The Education Minister Chareidi Unit is not interfering, the inspectors do not enter classrooms, and the curriculum in its entirety has been approved by the pedagogical secretariat and the audit unit. Reports to the contrary are simply slanderous and someone trying to create provocation. There is zero Ministry of Education involvement”.

Rabbi Sorotzkin explains he entered his post a half year ago and was hearing of “blatant Ministry interference” but has not found evidence of this during past months. He feels someone has an axe to grind and is trying to create a provocation. He explains the Ministry has been abiding by the agreement with Chinuch Atzmai. He concluded by explaining when Education Minister Naftali Bennett launched the Ministry’s Chareidi Unit, he phoned him and assured him the Ministry is turning a new leaf and the goal is cooperation, not interference, signaling this has been the reality.

  1. There is a popular Hebrew saying: בעל המאה הוא בעל הדעה, which basically means whoever pays for it has the right to say what goes on. People cannot expect to get funds from the government and then get upset when the government decides to interfere. If you don’t want any interference from the government, don’t take their money.
