While there is much attention being paid to the worrisome problem of drivers forgetting a child in a car, as should be the case, this story addresses an elderly woman, wheelchair bound, tied to a fence outdoors in Tel Aviv for 40 minutes by her caretaker R”L.

MK (Machane Tzioni) Nachman Shai, who heads the Knesset lobby to protect senior citizens, sent a letter to Tel Aviv Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Moshe Edri, calling for an investigation to be launched into the “serious incident” in which a caretaker tied an elderly woman in a wheelchair to a fence near the Ayalon Shopping Center for 40 minutes as she, the caretaker, went shopping.

As per the information taken from Facebook, “Today, on Tuesday, 27 Tammuz, at about 12:19, on Sheshet HaYamim Street (near Ayalon Shopping Center) near Wertheimer’s…I saw an elderly lady tied to the fence, seated in a chair. I did my shopping and when I returned, she was still there, some 40 minutes later, in the heat of the day!

“I approached her and asked ‘do you need something. Can I give you some water’? I noticed she was sweating heavily and almost did not communicate with me. A bit later, as I am watching to see what is going to be with the woman, no one approached her. I went into the store Wertheimer’s after seeing a foreign caretaker entering. I asked ‘are you responsible for the woman?’ She said she was, adding ‘sorry, sorry’ and then exited to bring the elderly woman some water”.

MK Shai explains that with all the difficult situations that take place, this is one for the books, one that may not be permitted to pass without an appropriate response, even if the woman’s family is willing to forgive the caretaker. The police must become involved and probe the matter which appears to be the result of a negligent caretaker”.

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri is calling to track down the caretaker in question and expel her from the country immediately.
