IDF Border Patrol Nabbed Sleeping

idfh.jpgTwo soldiers and their subordinates are in serious trouble after they were caught fast asleep in their Hummer border patrol vehicle while on patrol along the Lebanese border. Fortunately, they were nabbed by a commander, not Hizbullah terrorists.

They are all from the 603rd Regiment of the IDF’s Engineering Brigade. The regiment commander visited the area and spotted them, asleep in the vehicle, not too far from vigilant Hizbullah terrorists operating in southern Lebanon. The commander partially disassembled some of the weapons before waking them, making his point loud and clear.

Since the 2006 abduction of IDF soldiers Goldwasser HY”D and Regev HY”D by Hizbullah, spot inspections of border forces has become a regular occurrence.

Fellow soldiers of the 603rd explain they had not slept for the 48 hours prior to the patrol due to a severe manpower shortage in the area.

The IDF Spokesman’s Office confirms the incident, adding all involved are being dealt with by the regiment commander in an appropriate fashion.

NOTE: YWN-Israel refrained from publicizing a report from Israel Radio military correspondent Carmela Menashe for obvious reasons, but the incident has since been given wide media coverage, prompting the decision to bring it to this forum as well.

  1. I do not blame the soldiers.
A body can go without sleep for only so long.
This is the fault of the brilliant “defense minister” Barak for not having enough manpower in a critical area like the northern border to allow our boys so get something resembling a sufficient amount of sleep.
It is Barak that should sit in the “keleh” for this, not these young men, – AND that would be getting off easy, since if chas v’chalila they HAD been abducted, THAT would also have been HIS fault!!!

  2. In a certain sense it is irrelevant who’s at fault. The bottom line is that we have learned nothing. When the next couple of soldiers are kidnapped (chas v’shalom) we’ll be wringing our hands, crying: “How could this happen again?” Well, now we know the answer: stupidity and indifference.
