Following recent apparently overly optimistic reports, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday put things in perspective regarding the newly-developing Iron Dome defense system, intended to intercept close range rocket and mortar attacks. The minister stated that it will take years until the system is truly deployed along Israel’s northern and southern borders to provide a total response to rocket attacks.
The minister’s statements follow reports earlier in the week of successful tests involving Iron Dome, leading to widespread reports implying the system is near-operational.
At present however this is not the case and southern area residents along with others, “millions of residents” as the defense minister put it are indeed exposed to potential rocket attacks. The minister also issued another stern warning to Hamas on Monday, to halt rocket attacks, stating the response to such attacks would be significant.
