The U.S. East Coast faced one of the coldest nights of the season as frigid air spills south and threatens agriculture in Georgia, Alabama and the orange crop in Florida.
Freeze warnings were posted by the National Weather Service as far south as the Orlando area, which may be as many as 20 degrees below normal tonight, the National Weather Service said. The advisory alerted growers that subfreezing temperatures are imminent and may kill crops or other sensitive vegetation.
Tampa and others cities in the central part of the state are under a freeze warning from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. local time tomorrow. Temperatures may fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (zero Celsius) for more than three consecutive hours, the National Weather Service in Tampa said on its Web site.
Jacksonville, Florida, may see a record low tonight, and the Miami area will see temperatures 12 degrees to 13 degrees below normal for this time of year.
Tonight will be the coldest and offer the greatest danger of crop damage. The next chance for freezing will come next week.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture last month estimated Florida’s orange crop will be 0.7 percent smaller than earlier forecast because adverse weather reduced fruit size.
In New York, overnight lows were approximetly 22 degrees, with wind chills dropping the experience to single digits. Philadelphia saw a low of 20 degrees, and Washington close to to 19 degrees.

Oh how I wish there really was global warming but alas that is not the case.
So where is global warming when you need it?
Actually, this just show the power of President Obama. He goes to Copenhagen and says “Let there be cold”, and both North America and Europe get a cold wave! He’s either a fool or a diety, and I tend to be dubious of the latter (no matter what his supporters think).
global warming
Perhaps they should have all the oranges go into deep thought about a particular iyan, so that when they freeze they will become frozen concentrate??
In all seriousness the Florida orange crop has had problems in the past number of years due to disease, storms, and frost. It came to the point about 3 years ago – according to a major grower I spoke to – where they needed about 5 straight good years with at least no major hurricanes for the crop to replenish itself & for the new saplings to grow.
Bottom line is a freeze like this so far south can kill the crop. This will mean the price of anything with orange juice etc., in it will skyrocket.
Maybe Hashem is sending a message to Al Gore and all the other meshuga’im that they should try to deal and solve problems for humanity which are in their realm, and not meddle into nature and other forces beyond their realm. So much for Al Gore’s source of parnassah! At least he got his nobel prize – that’s all that counts, right?
Well, I guess Global Warming will be suspended for a while.
as hard as it seems to believe, citrus are not native to Florida or California, but to far Asia. The whole industry is a gamble based on short term information. Here in Jerusalem,(Asia, south west to be exact) my lemon tree is pumping out lemons at roughly the same lattitude as Florida. Disease, predation and weather incompatiblity is par for the course for a non native species.
It is a good time for the futures market. Gold is up as well as precious metals. And I don’t think we have seen the end to crude oil.
Hey, akuperma, you are an Obama supporter. Do you change your position so that when you give support for one of Obama’s Marxist policies, you will be more credible?
7, Thank you for your insane argument. Citrus has been growing in FL for a long as anyone remembers. Granted people didnt populate the area till whenever it was but the fact is that the stuff grows. The same HKBH that tells the trees to grow in EY could tell them to grow in FL as well and the same HKBH that is sending cold etc., to FL could Chas V’Sholom tell the trees in EY not to produce either.
Alas, I dont think you thought of it that way.
