Security concerns aren’t lost on New York City officials, as they prepare for the biggest party of the year at the crossroads of the world — Times Square.
With an estimated 1 million people converging on this popular piece of real estate on New Year’s Eve, the city’s eyes and ears are ready for anything.
“We assume here that New York is the number one terrorist target in America,” NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
On Monday the police commissioner said the NYPD would throw its usual heavy array of people and precaution to protect the masses.
“We’ll have biological detection equipment. We’ll have decontamination facilities there. We’ll have our counter sniper teams in place,” Kelly said.
With the eyes of the world on the Times Square and its iconic ball kicking off the new year, city bosses are hoping your own eyes will help make it a safe night for everyone.
“If you see anything, there’s plenty of police officers. Just walk up and say hey, maybe I’m wrong but this guy looks nefarious or whatever and then let the professionals deal with it. That’s what they’re trained to do,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
Authorities are working with federal officials in making the night safe and said Friday’s attempted bombing of a U.S. airliner won’t change the diligence already underway here.
“We are doing more than any other city anywhere to protect ourselves from a terrorist attack but we certainly can’t guarantee everything,” Kelly said. “We live in a dangerous world. I would say that this event in and of itself has not made us change anything, anything that we plan to do for New Year’s Eve. We have no specific threat against the city.”
