MTA Testing Countdown Clocks For NYC Subways

mta5.jpgNYC Subway riders may soon be able to answer that age-old question: When’s the next train?

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is testing countdown clocks in some subway stations. The clocks count down the number of minutes until the next train.

The MTA says the countdown signs can also be used to give information about delays and other transit information.

The clocks are being tested in some stations in the Bronx on the number 6 line. The MTA hopes to have them installed on a number of subway lines by the middle of 2011.

Talk of the new transit additions comes days after the agency announced plenty of subtractions. Last Wednesday, the MTA’s full board approved it’s “Doomsday” budget, slashing services.

Students who once rode for free will have to pay to get to school now, and the agency will eliminate 21 local bus routes, along with the W and Z lines on the subway. It’s also shortening the G and M lines. The cuts are expected to go into effect next summer.

  1. The Washington (DC, including Maryland and Virginia suburbs) have them, and they work very well. However NYC has a much more complicated system, and is retrofitting the 21st century electronics to a system that is over 100 years old. It would be nice if it worked.
