4 Shot to Death, Dozens Hurt in Chicago Over July 4 Weekend

1Chicago police flooded the streets with thousands of officers and took dozens of gang members into custody over the July 4 weekend. Fewer people were shot to death, but more suffered gunshot wounds than over the same holiday weekend last year.

There had been widespread fear in some of Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods that the holiday weekend could be particularly bloody following a June in which about 15 people were shot a day.

Preliminary figures show that four people were fatally shot and more than 60 others were injured by gunfire. Last year’s total was seven dead and 48 injured. Chicago Police plan to release final numbers later Tuesday morning.

The totals don’t represent a dramatic spike in the violence, but they also don’t suggest the violence is easing.

  1. The last line is a complete lie. There have been over 2000 gun related deaths in Chicago this year. Each month for the entire year has been a lot bigger than the same month in 2015. Google it, you’ll see the chart the Chicago Tribune publishes weekly.
By the way, Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the country. Criminals love gun laws. It leaves their victims defenseless.
