NY: Reward offered to catch Menorah destroyer

A day after a Bay Shore Shul’s outdoor menorah was destroyed in an apparent hate crime, a Holbrook man has stepped forward to offer a $500 reward for information that results in an arrest and conviction.

Clarence Mendel, 62, said he decided to offer the reward after reading about the menorah’s desecration. The Jewish Center of Bay Shore has accepted his offer and agreed to match it.

The tall metal menorah was knocked to the ground, one of the arms was disconnected and the nine electric candles were broken or dangling off.

It was the second time a menorah display was destroyed in Suffolk this holiday season. An incident on Dec. 17 in St. James was caught on surveillance tape. An arrest has not been made.
