NYC Youth To Protest MTA Ending Free Student MetroCards

mta12.jpgYoung protesters will show up at MTA headquarters in Manhattan and march to Times Square today to voice outrage over a proposal to phase out free student MetroCards.

A classroom walkout is scheduled at 2 p.m., with the protesting students marching on to Times Square.

More than 500,000 students in the city would lose their MetroCards under the MTA budget approved last week.

Advocates say students should not be made to pay to get to school.

Meanwhile, the mayor and MTA officials announced today that the first phase of the 7 subway line extension underneath Manhattan’s Hudson Yards is now complete.

A tunnel-boring machine has completed the excavation for a $2.1 billion train storage section underneath 26th and 34th Streets along 11th Avenue.
