Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) recently addressed illegal garbage dumping throughout the community after noticing large amounts of trash being left out on street corners. To resolve the issue, Hikind wrote a letter to Superintendent Adam Engleman of NYC Sanitation Enforcement requesting enforcement agents “open trash bags to track down who the perpetrators are and issue a sanitation summons.”
“In addition, I urge sanitation enforcement agents to request and review any video surveillance from the stores and try to determine who is illegally dumping refuse,” Hikind continued in the letter. “The utter disrespect and disregard of a community and its residents by a few individuals should not go unpunished.”
Major commercial avenues, like 13th Avenue in Boro Park, have been subjected to an excessive quantity of household trash and recycling bags, which are often torn, leaving debris scattered along the street. In addition, furniture, construction material, appliances, bicycles and unwrapped mattresses have been spotted on street corners as well.
“Nobody likes to walk down the street and see an overwhelmingly large amount of trash overflowing into the streets,” Assemblyman Hikind said of the quality-of-life matter. “We must do our due diligence in tracking down and fining those who are illegally dumping their garbage. The people of our community deserve a better, cleaner community.”

The stricter the sanitation rules will be on garbage disposal, the more people will find ways to get rid of tickets… and our streets will not be any cleaner.. We need to be more creative in finding solutions..
How about giving out (or selling more recycle bins) for the community instead of ticketing…

Hikind was elected to serve in albany. And he gets a nice salary benefits and pension for that. Yet he is preoccupied with Israel Washington and NYC. ( Dov serves on no committees) And bb/t/w. Where is greenfield on this ; seems like he’s also preoccupied with his eye on washington. They play us for fools.
For someone who’s so involved in local issues, rather than legislative matters it’s shocking that he has no understanding of the reasons for the garbage on the streets. Firstly landlords of apartments above stores do not provide garbage cans for the tenants or arrange for the garbage to be taken care of. There is dumping from businesses that do not have the required private sanitation service. There are illegal stores and businesses located in cellars, and of course illegal dwelling units in cellars. With all the illegal cellar apartments on top of the fact that 1 and 2 family houses were knocked down and replaced with 6-8 family buildings the population is double what was there 20 years ago stressing City services. Dov should know the facts and seek solutions rather than pose for photo ops.
Sadly, nothing will help. There are way too many bad apples who have turned Boro Park into an absolute pig sty and many of those are now coming to Monsey in droves and turning Monsey into a pig sty. I have seen several properties purchased by former boro park/williamsburg folks who have no problem dumping garbage bags, boxes, etc into back yards and onto the streets. Is it that difficult to put the same bags into a can on garbage pickup day? Its not only chilul Hashem, but its despicable and distasteful.
