A bill heading to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s desk would authorize home health care aides to take on advanced tasks including administering routine or prefilled medications to patients.
The legislation would authorize the state Education Department to issue regulations for qualifications, training and specific tasks.
Sponsors say aides would work under the direct supervision of a nurse employed by a home care services agency, hospice program or enhanced assisted living residence.
The provisions would take effect in 18 months.
AARP advocated for the measure, which was negotiated with lawmakers and the Cuomo administration. The group says it will help ease the strain on more than four million unpaid family members who currently provide care at home.
