The countdown is on, as a key New Jersey committee is expected to vote on same-gender marriage Monday and sent the bill to the full senate, where it will face the real challenge.
Lawmakers have just a few days left to get the legislation to Governor Jon Corzine’s desk for his signature.
He has 43 days left. After that, Jon Corzine gives way to successor Chris Christie, and 43 days are what those trying to get a same-gender marriage bill passed in the state have.
If the legislation doesn’t get through the NJ state senate this week, Christie has said he will not support same-gender marriage as governor.
“This is one of those moments in history when, I think, those of us in public life can stand up and move this forward,” Corzine said.
The judiciary committee of the New Jersey senate votes on the bill Monday. State Senator Christopher Bateman is on the committee, and acknowledges it will probably get through by a slim margin, but he says he is still voting against it.
“I voted for a civil union, because I believe everybody has equal rights protection under the Constitution,” Bateman said. “However, I’m not ready to redefine marriage. I feel very strongly that marriage is between a man and a woman.”
It seems as if the bill will get through the committee on Monday. Then, it would go to the full New Jersey state senate Thursday where, chances are, it will not pass.
Some NJ legislators say they were influenced by 2,300 signatures gathered by the Progressive Campaign for same-gender marriage. However, the Catholic church came up with a petition of their own, and some 156,000 signatures.
Last week, the New York state senate defeated a same-gender marriage bill. If New Jersey approves the measure, it would become the sixth state to allow Toeiva couples to marry.

Stop the Sodomites NOW!
Joseph- and how would this stop the sodomites?
And can someone tell me where the leader of the State Assembly stands on this issue. I am talking about Gary Schaer.
Instituting capital punishment for the offense of sodomy would indeed be more effective in stopping the sodomites.
Mr. Governor, why do you think just about all of Lakewood voted against you; because they don’t like the style of ties that you wear?
Can you just stop talking about it??
Ginook Shoin!!
As if this is the most pressing issue concerning klal Yisroel.
Gary Schaer is staunchly against it.
how could the lakewood gedolim have endorsed corzine if he supports this bill?
There’s a debate that marriage means something other than a man and a woman???? Sick world.
Dear Da’as BaalHabayis the Lakewood Gedolim among them Rav shmuel Meir Katz, Rav Osher Chaim Lieberman, Rav Yackov HaKohen Forcheimer, Rav Yeruchom Olshin, Rav Yisroel Neumann among others (listed in no particular order) made clear to numerous people that they in no way endorsed Corzine and some of them activley campaigned for Chris Cristie.
Glad to correct some misconceptions.
If they protect marriage the goyim are going to have a good year. IF they don’t, they’ll be going down the tubes big time, and not just on the ground in Afghanistan.
When The Almighty gets stepped on so bad as He does in calling this abomination by the holy term of marriage, the suffering gets spread out Hashem Yerachaim.
