El Al: Europe competition agency seeks information

El Al, the Israeli airline, said the European competition commission asked the carrier for information regarding an inquiry into “activities that appear to damage competition in the field of air-freight services.”

El Al said in a statement to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange that it received a letter from the commission at the carrier’s German offices.

In the letter the agency said it had information regarding “wide contacts that were established between airlines and other entities regarding various price additions and other subjects, for example, cargo-freight pricing.”

El Al said that as far as it knows, inquiries into possible violations of competition laws in the air-freight industry are being carried out in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere against a number of carriers. The carrier said it was assessing its alternatives regarding the letter. In September, El Al said antitrust authorities at the U.S. Justice Department were seeking information from the carrier in the course of an inquiry into possible air-cargo-price fixing.
