NYC Orders Removal Of Solid Roll-Down Security Gates From Businesses

The NYC council voted Monday to ban security gates for business that completely shield commercial storefront windows and doors from view, while permitting gates that allow people to see inside, a report in the New York Times said.

Businesses affected, including banks, barber shops, beauty salons, health clinics, dry cleaners, dental offices and retail stores, have until July 1, 2026 to install gates that have 70 percent of the area they cover visible, and all gates installed after July 1, 2011 have to follow the rules, according to the report. Council members said the legislation will cut down on graffiti, help beautify neighborhoods, and give emergency workers the ability to look inside the building, the report said.

  1. Welcome to Chelm! Instead of getting serious about catching and arresting AND IMPRISONING graffiti criminals, they will cause an additional expense to store owners to change their gates! This world is getting more uPsIdE dOwN every day!

  2. The part of their reasoning that make sense is the last one “allow emergency workers to see inside” and it probaly was what caused the legistlation.
