Commenting on the report, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Machpud Shlita, a known expert in many areas including kashrus and milah, explained to the media on Wednesday, 24 Iyar that a mohel who himself has herpes mustn’t perform a bris. The rav explains such a mohel cannot practice until he is cured of his herpes sores on his mouth. He warns a mohel can indeed infect an infant and therefore if one has herpes he mustn’t perform a bris.

He adds that if a child does develop herpes, one should consult with an expert physician.
