Rishon L’Tzion Rav Amar Shlita Blesses Shalit Release Deal

amar.jpgIn an address on Monday night, Rishon L’Tzion HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Amar Shlita surprised his audience, giving his bracha for the deal being closed behind the scenes for the release of Gilad Shalit, apparently before even knowing the details.

Speaking at a kinos in the Jerusalem Ramada Hotel, the chief rabbi stated that while he is not an expert regarding the details, he hears significant progress towards a deal is being made.

The Rav added that in addition to the major matter of bringing Gilad home, such a deal represents agreement between two nations, an important and welcome factor in our region today, one that he blesses.

  1. B”H something different from the usual nationalist speak.

Rav Amar is well known to be a non-Zionist (or very moderate Zionist). I think he is a very wise person in this regard. I’ve heard his name before, in interreligious conferences which included Christian (Catholic) and Islamic leaders.

  2. It pains me to see the face of Torah maligned when a Rav of his stature gives his brocha for this terrible decree which frees murderers and, because it rewards the chayos for their crimes, encourages similar acts in the future!

I have a hard time seeing how this is at all mutar al pi halacha.

  3. It pains me to see a Yid who clearly is an avid internet user have the audacity to question Da’as Torah b’farhesya, and to have the chutzpah to make a statement against a gadol baTorah how you have a hard time seeing how this fits into halacha. Are you learned in any areas of the sugyas of pidyon shvuyin? You’re commenting on a person who spends his every available waking hour immersed in Torah and halacha, your sitting at home (as I am as well) reading the news on your internet browser. Wow.
