Customs Officials Close ‘Bug’ Duty Free in Ben-Gurion

If you are looking for a computer or electronics at the Ben-Gurion International Airport duty free shops area, you are in for a disappointment, at least in the coming days.

Customs officials on Monday closed the branch of the Bug, the computer electronics store, explaining it appears the store has been selling items at duty free prices to shoppers who do not present a passport and boarding pass, people who are not eligible to the tax discount.

Store operators Oded and Nirit Modan were questioned and released by authorities.

Bug officials report that the investigators found eight cases, all relatively small sales, stressing there are tens of thousands of legitimate sales and overall, the store has been operating properly.

Customs officials report that on a regular day, some 12,000 citizens who are not entitled to make purchases in duty free shops have access to the Bug and other tax-exempt stores.

The Bug duty free began operating in the duty free area of the airport in Sept. 2008, replacing Sakal.
