Beginning Monday and happening all week, the NYPD will work to make bicyclists safer by focusing on dangerous violations in bike lanes.
There will be a crackdown in all 77 precincts on drivers who do not play by the rules when it comes to the bike lanes.
Agents will be going after drivers who are parked or double parked in bicycle lanes.
A city Department of Transportation report out this month says bicycling is up 300 percent citywide and an estimated 420,000 use bikes each day on city streets.
The Bicycle Safe Passage Initiative is part of the city’s Vision Zero initiative to protect the safety of the city’s bicycle network.
NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents have been directed to focus attention on parking violations most associated with endangering bicyclists (parking in a bike lane, double parking, no standing).
The NYPD says it anticipates this initiative will send a strong message to motorists to share the city’s roads responsibly with bicyclists.
Since 2010, NYC DOT has expanded and enhanced the on-street bike network by nearly 300 miles, including more than 40 protected lane miles, with a record 12 miles installed in 2015. NYC DOT is on track to install even more protected lanes in 2016, with over 15 new miles planned.

It would certainly be more effective in reducing accidents if they focused on violations by those riding bikes who ignore traffic law. Dangerous violations include riding on sidewalks, not stopping for traffic lights and stop signs as well as riding the wrong way on one way streets. All these violations are ignored by the NYPD.
