NJ Exit Polls Show Property Taxes, Economy Top Issues

Early exit polling for the New Jersey governor’s race shows the majority of voters today believe that none of the candidates have a viable plan to lower property taxes, according to the National Election Pool conducted by Edison Research.

Regardless of how people voted, the exit poll asked which candidate had the best property tax plan. But the majority of people chose “none” over Gov. Jon Corzine, Republican Chris Christie and independent Chris Daggett, according to the Edison Research exit poll.

While property taxes is a controversial issue in any New Jersey election season, it actually ranked second to the economy and jobs, which a majority of voters interviewed for the exit poll rated as the issue that mattered most in this campaign, the exit poll said.

Another perennial issue, New Jersey corruption, ranked third, ahead of health. That comes after heated town hall meetings over the summer regarding President Obama’s efforts at health care reform.

President Obama made three stops in New Jersey to stump for Corzine, and the vast majority of voters who pulled the lever for him approve of the job the president is doing.

The opposite is true among Chrisitie supporters, a majority of who disapprove of the job the president is doing, according to the exit poll data.
