Tel Aviv Councilman Binyamin Beviof, a representative of Shas and the city’s Bucharin community on Wednesday morning found the windows of his vehicle smashed. This followed an attack a number of months ago in which the tires were slashed. He has also been the recipient of telephone threats. Beviof fears these events are not simply coincidental, but has told police he believes they are all connected.
According to a Chareidim report, Beviof told police that he fears for his life, and on Wednesday, after discovering the smashed windows, he children were afraid to leave home and they did not go to school.
Police recently arrested a suspect, believed responsible for the earlier attack on the councilman’s taxi. He is a resident of the city’s Kiryat Shalom neighborhood.
A known spokesman for the city’s thousands of members of the Bucharin community, Beviof was elected to the city council in the last election. Chareidim reports during recent months, there has been a widening chasm between Beviof’s faction and Shas, the faction of R’ Shlomo Zafrani. Some attribute the dispute to Beviof’s embracing of chiloni Mayor Ron Huldai while Shas is not a member of the city coalition, remaining in opposition. Beviof is quoted as telling Chareidim “I do not know what they want from me”.
Recently the tires of the vehicle belonging to R’ Avraham Menale were slashed. Menale is the director of the Chevra Kadisha in Tel Aviv, with police looking at a possible [and most unfortunate] increase in attack resulting from growing disagreements within the chareidi community.
