The European Jewish Congress has called on the European Union to form a new independent human rights organization with fellow democracies and nations with respect for human rights.

Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress expressed outrage at the high level of politicization demonstrated at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) with the recent Goldstone Report resolution.

“The UNHRC has lofty goals which of course we support. However, in practice it has become the ‘theatre of the absurd’ when it allows nations like Saudi Arabia and Cuba a veto over democracies like Israel,” Kantor said. “We call on the European Union, to create a new human rights organization made up of those nations which are open and free democracies and leave politics outside of its doors.”

The Goldstone Report resolution amply demonstrated how the UNHRC has become a place where political horse-trading is the norm and respect for human rights is extremely low down on the list of concerns.

“The council’s obsession with Israel is hampering its efforts to achieve justice for those who scream out for their rights as human beings. The Goldstone Report resolution is leaving many disappointed and in despair that true human rights abuse will receive little interest.” Kantor continued.

The one-sided nature of the resolution was the reason it was not supported by many States, including Canada, Japan, Switzerland the European Union. Many European nations are represented on the Council including the United Kingdom, Italy and France.

“This report places at risk any decent nation who wishes to fight and eliminate terror and will jeopardize the efforts of many European countries defending our continent around the world from the ravages of the ever increasing terrorist threat,” Kantor said.

“Good, decent and civilized nations must stand up to the bullying tactics of many UNHRC members, like Cuba, Syria and Somalia,” Kantor continued. “These nations use the council to deflect criticism of their own actions and thus the cause of human rights is not addressed.”

The European Jewish Congress will lobby the European nations represented on the UN Human Rights Council to reject the Goldstone Commission Report when it arrives at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
