Deadline Coming For Taxpayers To Claim Tax Refunds For 2012

taxSen. Charles Schumer says many New Yorkers have not yet filed to get their 2012 federal tax refunds, totaling more than $56 million.

He said Wednesday that Internal Revenue Service data show 57,600 New Yorkers haven’t filed 2012 returns.

Out of that number, more than 24,000 upstate taxpayers can still file. He said refunds upstate alone are worth more than $23 million.

The Hudson Valley has the highest number of people who can get a refund, with 6,777 people still able to file for more than $6.5 million. The average refund per filing in New York is $796.

Taxpayers have up to three years to claim a refund, making April 18 the last day to claim for 2012. The money goes to the U.S. Treasury if a return isn’t filed.

  1. If the regular tax-due-date was April 15 in 2013, one must file by April 15, 2016 in order to get a refund. That is tomorrow! Please don’t wait till Monday.
