As is usually the case, Israeli officials feel the compulsion to respond to Arab rhetoric and propaganda, this time Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz, the rav of the Kosel and Holy Sites, who felt compelled to issue a statement in the face of ongoing Islamic violence in the capital based on allegations that “Israel is working to take over al-Aqsa”.
R’ Rabinowitz stated allegations of ongoing excavations under Har HaBayis are baseless, stressing most of all because such a move would be contrary to halacha. “I am shocked just how religious leaders are capable of lying and to fabricate towards advancing their agenda. To allege we are excavating under Har HaBayis is tantamount to saying day is night”.
The rav added that of course anywhere one would dig one would find remnants of the Beis HaMikdosh and additional proof as to Israel’s historic ties to the Holy Site. He also stated that generally speaking, religious leaders in the Old City act responsibly towards maintain calm and permitting all religions access to holy sites but from time-to-time, outsiders seek to incite and stir the situation with lies concerning holy sites.
Religious leaders must place such inciters outside the acceptable circle, those seeking to divide the Old City. Rabbi Rabinowitz stated we cannot permit people to make their way to the Old City for the purpose of harming others, people aligned with other religions. People of all religions must know he can visit the area without fear of attack or harm.
The rabbi used the opportunity to thank Israel Police and other security agencies for tireless efforts, towards permitting visitors to make their way to the Kosel in absolute safety.
