NYC Crime & Transit Stats Coming To Your Phone

nypd5.gifThe NYPD is going digital, partnering with Nixle, a California-based Internet messaging-service provider, to text or e-mail to residents’ cellphones information on crime stats, traffic, subway delays and safety tips, The NY Post reports.

The free service started as a pilot project in the Upper East Side’s 23rd Precinct last month. It is now being expanded to residents who register with Nixle in other precincts on the Upper East and West sides.

“We’re trying to bring the community together, and this is part of it,” said one high-ranking police official with knowledge of the project.

Other precincts joining the program include the 24th, 25th and 28th on the Upper West Side, the NYPD Housing Bureau PSA 6 in Harlem and the 34th Precinct, which covers Washington Heights and Inwood.
