The Justice Ministry has intervened halting the planned elections for the Chief Rabbi of Nesher, which was scheduled for Thursday, 7 Adar-II. The ministry stepped in to halt the election on Wednesday evening after learning some of the candidates are related to members of the voting body.
Last month officials set elections for a new chief rabbi in the city after there has not been anyone filling the post for the past eight years. Persons qualified were permitted to submit their candidacy. There were 11 candidates in all.
The ministry learned that some of the candidates are related to some of the people on the committee that elects the chief rabbi. The ministry ordered replacing those people with others, to make sure no one voting is related to any of the candidates.
