The European Union on Sunday condemned latest declarations by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad including that the Holocaust is a “myth,” a statement said.
“The Presidency of the European Union condemns statements by President Ahmadinejad at the Quds Day rally in Tehran, where he repeated denials of the Holocaust and of the right to exist of the State of Israel,” it said.
Addressing an annual pro-Palestinian rally in Tehran on Friday, Ahmadinejad also said that “the very existence of this regime is an insult to the dignity of the people,” in a reference to Israel.
He added: “They (Western powers) launched the myth of the Holocaust. They lied, they put on a show and then they support the Jews.”
“If as you claim the Holocaust is true, why can a study not be allowed?” the Iranian president said.
“Such statements encourage anti-Semitism and hatred. We call on the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran to contribute constructively to peace and security in the Middle East,” the EU statement said.
