Mr. David Fremd, 54, was stabbed to death in the city of Paysandú in Uruguay late Tuesday, 28 Adar-I. It is reported the attacker shouted “Ala Akbar” as he lunged at him. David was a local merchant.

Local reports state David was walking on the street when he was jumped by the attacker who stabbed him in his back ten times. He died of his wounds a short time later. His son, who ran to his assistance, was lightly wounded by the attacker.

Police have arrested a suspect, 35, who they say has a criminal record. The attack is being studied by police to determine if it was a hate crime or a criminal incident.

Ynet quotes Uruguay Chief Rabbi Bentzion Spitz stating “The victim has a secular appearance, but is known in the town as Jewish”.

According to Rabbi Spitz, there are 15,000 Jews in Uruguay.
