With Yom Kippur beginning on Sunday evening, for many Israelis, this year’s long weekend provides additional time for vacation and partying R”L. According to travel agencies, while many do so surreptitiously, tens of thousands of Israelis have purchased Yom Kippur vacation packages – seeking to ‘take advantage’ of the three-day weekend.
Actually, travel agents report many travelers are already leaving on Wednesday night and returning on motzei Yom Kippur. Boaz Wachsman of Ofir Tours reports the popular sites are area tourists’ possibilities. He explains many just ‘sit around and relax’ but prefer to do so abroad, not at home in Israel.

We should see this as a reminder to the importance of doing Kiruv. They don’t understand the beauty of yiddishkeit, so we must be good examples and teachers.

How are these Jews going to learn any better if the frum world doesn’t take notice and try to impact them for the better??
Especially this time of year when we are being judged, Hashem sees that we don’t really care about the spiritual state of our brethren!!!

I have to agree with number 2 here.
We know that there are unfortunately many people who have drifted away from judaism even to the point of this sort of behavior on yom kippur.
Does it do anyone a favor to post something like this for people to read, criticize and judge? Is that going to help the situation any?
This post is nothing more than a “ooooh look at what THEY are doing! tsk tsk” and is in very poor taste.
Posting an article that widens the divide between Jews right before Rosh HaShana is a real shame.
I agree with #2. You know, there are some who hold that frum yidden are responsible, to some degree, to bring over those who are not so.

I’m sure most of them are fasting and not traveling on Yom Kippur itself, and instead of sitting at home they want to to so somewhere els…
On the other hand, I think it should also be noted that the vast majority of israelis, including the secular, do fast (or at least daven in shul) on yom kippur.
Why speak ill of chilonim? It’s lashon hara, motzi shem ra, machlokes, etc. etc. Let’s sling mud at the frummies instead. It’s much more interesting and a lot more fun.
The purpose of this post, seems to be more about affirming “our” spiritual superiority over “them” than about anything else.
Ya wanna talk Jews and YOM KIPPUR, look in our own backyard of USA. Here there are maybe 25% of the Jews of America who go to synagogue, fast or remember the day as a holy one. ISRAEL wins out always in Jews observing YOM TOVIM.
It is totally quiet in Jerusalem in every single neighborhood and highway on Yom Kippur.
Now….what are WE doing to make things better?
Who are WE reaching out to?
Who are WE inviting for Shabbos?
Remember what happened in Israel on Yom Kippur three decades ago? Isn’t it possible that the Israelis remember it and are either traumatized so want to spend their yomtov elsewhere or are fearful of history repeating itself so want to get away on that day? Don’t give yourself more reason to klap “al chet” next week for not judging fairly…
We are at fault!! How have we allowed this to happen????? Let us act now!!!!!!!
While no one is as opposed to the continuation of the Zionist experiment as I am, I believe that many of those going abroad are indeed those who are not halachically Jewish. Keep in mind that this group includes as many as 300,000 non-Jews and could well account for a good percentage of those going away for YK.
Then there are those who are going away but at least fasting wherever they are going.
