Dear Yeshiva World News Readers and members of the Frum community,
I am writing to tell you why I am best qualified to be the next Comptroller of the City of New York.
I have worked with many of you over the past 15 years, first as an Assemblywoman and, most recently, representing the Kew Gardens and Forest Hills communities in the City Council. In this position, I have worked with many of the local nonprofits, including Tomche Shabbos, the Queens Jewish Community Council, the JCC of Kew Gardens and Richmond Hill, and Chaveirim of Queens, among many others, and my office has always been open and responsive to the special needs of the Jewish community – both large and small.
As Chairwoman of the City Council’s Land Use Committee, I worked tirelessly to create nearly 90,000 units of affordable housing throughout the city, because I understand the growing housing needs of Jewish communities throughout the five boroughs. I also have been on the steps of City Hall with many of your leaders to fight for and encourage Mayor Bloomberg and Council Speaker Quinn to restore Priority 7 after-school vouchers, which mean so much to Yeshiva school families. And I worked tirelessly with City agencies for the specific needs of the community with respect to meal deliveries.
On issues critical to Israel, I have been a passionate and unyielding supporter and defender of the Jewish state. As Comptroller and chief investment officer of the City’s pension funds, I will actively work to protect our financial interests from involvement with pro-terrorist entities or any companies that are anti-Israel.
Representing this diverse community has given me numerous opportunities to interact with many of you in order to solve real and pressing problems. If elected City Comptroller, I will continue to stand up every day for the needs of this community at the highest levels of City and State governments.
But first, I need your help. The race is very close and I need your vote in the Democratic primary election coming up on September 15th. The Frum community is dear to me, and I can only hope that I have earned your support. Please come out to vote on September 15th. The stakes have never been higher, nor the challenges greater for us all.
Thanks you for your support and Shana Tova.
Your Friend,
Melinda Katz
Councilwoman and candidate for New York City Comptroller.
