It’s hard to believe that almost 13 months have passed since Dovid Winiarz left us. With his ever-present smile, his perpetual simchas hachaim and his inexhaustible supply of energy, Dovid seemed larger than life. There was no project that was too big for him to tackle and no detail that was small enough to escape his attention. But while Dovid spent his days looking for ways to help others and to brighten their day, his main goal was something far grander: spreading the light of Torah throughout the world.

It should come as no surprise that Dovid was one of the founders of Yeshiva Zichron Paltiel in Staten Island, wowing the crowd every year as emcee at the yeshiva dinner. What was it that kept everyone in the room fascinated every time Dovid took to the microphone? Not only was he able to give over a great vort and to share a touching story, he had the unique ability to connect with people because everything Dovid did was completely and totally from the heart. You knew that he was real, that he meant every word that he said and that everything about him was completely and totally genuine, which is what makes his loss so much harder to bear.

And yet, while Dovid left us, he is also still very much with us. His words still echo in our ears and his mission of spreading Torah resonates in our hearts daily, especially at Yeshiva Zichron Paltiel. Dovid was instrumental in the creation of this makom Torah and it carries on every day because of his efforts. What better tribute could there be to this extraordinary individual than to build a new Beis Medrash in his name?
