A teenager is dead, and another seriously injured, after the moped they were riding on crashed just minutes after a “smash-and-grab-robbery”.

According to the published reports, the crash happened on the A107 next to Clapton Common.

Stamford Hill Hatzola and London Ambulance were on the scene in seconds, and began emergency treatment. One of the teens on the bike was pronounced dead on the scene. A second one was transported in serious condition.

Scotland Yard said in a statement that police officers had been chasing the moped after a “smash-and-grab robbery” in nearby Kingsland Road.

The chase ensued after the male riders, believed to be in their late teens, did not stop for the Metropolitan Police. The National Police Air Service was also called to try and stop them.

The moped was first located by police on Stamford Road at 11:45am, but 10 minutes later it collided with the van on Upper Clapton Road.

The Met said that the Directorate of Professional Standards at the force had been informed of the incident.

Chevra Kaddisha Services were not needed in this incident.

Both lanes of the busy road were closed to traffic as police cordoned off an area between Darenth and Castlewood Road.

A London Ambulance spokesman said: “We were called at 11.52am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a motorbike at Clapton Common.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene including an advanced paramdedic, an incident officer and a medical team from London’s Air Ambulance by car.

“Sadly, despite extensive efforts to resuscitate the patient, a young man was pronounced dead at the scene by the doctor from London’s Air Ambulance.”

The spokesman also confirmed a second boy was taken as a priority to a major trauma centre and remains in a serious but stable condition.
