NY1 Exclusive: Report Criticizes NYC Park Hazard Urgency

nycp.jph.jpgA new study obtained exclusively Wednesday by NY1 shows dangerous conditions at city parks have gone unfixed for too long.

Investigators for State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli found it sometimes took weeks to correct about 50 percent of the hazardous conditions it surveyed in parks across the five boroughs.

One of the parks listed in the report was the Astoria hockey rink where walls were splintered and had dangerous bolts exposed.

Officials say the conditions were observed more than a month after it was supposed to be fixed. On Wednesday, there were still jagged places in spots.

The city Parks Department says all of the locations found in the study have been fixed.

“We have a massive park system here in the city. They need to do a better job though of tracking when they identify a hazard, especially the priority one, DiNapoli said. “The most potentially threatening hazards they need to do a better job of their tracking their progress and remediating that condition.”

In a statement, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said “We have the safest and best maintained playgrounds in the world and their high quality condition is evident in the fact that hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers use and enjoy them every day.”

Benepe also said most unsafe problems are addressed by the Parks Department immediately.
